Jen and Joey: A grounded wedding in the Blue Mountains

As a couple who both felt their relationship was right from the first moment they met, Jen and Joey knew pretty early on that a wedding was in their future. When hearing about their love story, it seems like a deep, grounded, knowing feeling has driven their relationship from the start, and continued with thoughtful and value driven decisions for their wedding. One excellent decision was to engage Less Stuff, More Meaning member, Henry Paul Photography as their photographer!

What we loved hearing was that their proposal story didn’t begin with a ring, it began with a pre-loved dress. After spotting an incredible vintage dress in a Newtown vintage store, they bought it on a whim. They started looking for an Australian opal while enquiring with a friend about making the ring for them which they designed together. Then on the sly, Joey got the ring delivered early and still managed to surprise Jen with a picnic proposal, overlooking a valley in the Blue Mountains.

And it was there in the Blue Mountains that they were wed, on a property in Blackheath. They ensured this event was fun-filled for themselves and their guests, which is obvious by all the smiles captured by photographer, Hank! They celebrated their love of birds (spot the awesome Feather Joey is wearing), they engaged people they knew to help with the wedding (like the flowers and the celebrant) and they made careful decisions to minimise their carbon footprint.

They had a beautiful outdoor ceremony including both drinking from a quaich, a traditional Scottish two-handled cup that is used to celebrate a bond between two clans or families. They engaged an AUSLAN interpreter for some of their deaf guests, to sign during the ceremony and speeches (Jen works as an interpreter herself). They also acknowledged the Traditional Owners.

For couple portraits they trekked up the mountain to Chicken and Hen Rock to enjoy a thermos of tea in their personalised mugs. The reception was full of wonderful speeches and lots of music (including Jen on the drums!) and dancing, and for food they crafted a menu centred around all things potato. Their wedding cake was lamingtons. Everything was so unique to them as a couple and the joy absolutely spills from Hank’s photos! Have a look for yourselves!
